Michael Jackson made a huge mark in the world of music and in the world in general. When he died, we were all shocked and saddened. It’s hard to believe that such a huge name in music and in pop culture was gone. In some ways, it feels like he’s still here. Even though he’s not alive anymore, his music lives on to inspire future generations.
Keep reading to discover some insane facts about Michael Jackson, like which exotic animal he kept bringing to recording sessions with Freddie Mercury and the real reason he drank wine out of Diet Coke cans.
Not Weird Enough For Weird Al
Michael Jackson was a big fan of Weird Al, but he requested that he not record a parody of ‘Black or White’ because the message was too important. Weird Al did record a parody of another Michael Jackson song though. Remember ‘Eat It?’ Weird Al’s parody of ‘Beat It?’
That song was everything my preteen heart didn’t know it needed. It’s nice to know that Michael Jackson had a sense of humor, but even he had his limits.
Body Image Issues
As a child, Michael Jackson’s father would torment him about his appearance, calling him ‘fat-nose.’ Michael went on to have four rhinoplasties and fussed over how his body and face looked for the rest of his life.
It just goes to show, you have to be careful about what you say to people. You never know what they’re going to take to heart. Even the king of pop had a fragile ego.
After closely investigating Michael Jackson for more than a decade, the FBI found nothing to suggest that Jackson was guilty of child abuse. Still, the accusations themselves severely hurt Jackson’s reputation.
It’s almost impossible for some people to think of the singer now without thinking about how he could be a pedophile. Some people assert that “not guilty” is not the same thing as innocent, and they still think that Michael Jackson may have been involved in some shady crimes.
Always The Giver
In 2000, The Guinness Book of World Records cited Michael Jackson as the most philanthropic pop star in history. He gave over $300 million dollars to charity in his lifetime and visited hospitals and orphanages at every stop of his tours to hand out gifts and make donations.
Even after his death, Michael Jackson is still helping charities all over the world. 20% of his estate went to various non-profit organizations.
He Couldn’t Read Music
It just goes to show that music lives in your heart, not your head. You can go to school to learn scales and notation, but the people who are truly gifted musicians were just born with that kind of talent.
Pay It Forward
After Michael Jackson’s hair was accidentally set on fire during the shooting of a Pepsi commercial in 1983, he chose not to sue but instead asked Pepsi to fund the creation of a burn center.
Talk about paying it forward. It’s true that as one of the most famous pop stars in the world, Michael Jackson didn’t really need the money, but what he did was still selfless and lovely.
Quite The Prankster
Michael Jackson used to relentlessly prank call Russel Crowe, even though they never met each other in person. On the Graham Norton Show, Russel Crow revealed,
“He just got into the habit of wherever I was staying, [Michael] would just call into the hotel, ask for my room and put on funny voices. “I’d never met him! The first couple people I said it to – I didn’t want to sound like I was insane… When I actually started talking to people who really knew him well, they’d go, ‘Man, he does it all the time’.”
No Hair, Don’t Care
Michael Jackson’s autopsy report confirms that he was bald and wore wigs to conceal it. He likely lost his ability to grow hair after his head was burned while he was filming a Pepsi commercial in 1984.
The autopsy revealed that his head was bald and scarred and that his body was emaciated and full of needle marks. He was hiding a lot of secrets under that wig and all that makeup.
Michael Jackson tried to hang out casually at a club and people-watch but was surprised when he heard the DJ play remixes of his songs and said, “Wow, I didn’t know that they still played my music” in 2008.
I guess Michael Jackson didn’t realize how much of an impact his music made on the world, and how eternal and important his influence was. I get being humble, but I think Michael just really didn’t know how great he was.
Joseph Jackson tried to teach his kids a lesson about leaving their bedroom windows open, so one night while his son Michael was asleep, Joseph wore a mask, climbed through the window, and shouted at him. Michael Jackson would later have recurring nightmares of being kidnapped from his bedroom.
Joseph Jackson really did a number on his kids. It’s a wonder Michael could function in society at all. I wonder how the rest of the Jackson siblings are doing?
A Very Potter Musical
Michael Jackson wanted to do a Harry Potter musical but J.K. Rowling said no. Honestly, I’m kind of glad that she said no. I can’t imagine a serious Harry Potter musical. Of course, there was A Very Potter Musical, but that was unofficial and very tongue in cheek.
Now if only J.K. Rowling would cancel this whole Fantastic Beasts thing… I mean, I think I would prefer a Michael Jackson musical to The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Diet Coke, Please
Michael Jackson would request his wine be served in Diet Coke cans during flights because he didn’t want his kids to see him drinking alcohol. I think he probably just shouldn’t have had any alcohol in the first place. I don’t think alcohol mixes well with whatever else was in his system.
It’s nice that he was concerned about being a good role model, though. Michael Jackson: always thinking of the children.
Bubbles Is Alive And Well
Bubbles the Chimp (who once was famously Michael Jackson’s pet) is alive and well, living in a Florida sanctuary for retired apes – and he HATES cameras these days. Which is understandable, given how the first half of his life went.
Bubbles needs a break from the limelight. He is enjoying being around other apes and living in a more natural, low key environment. I hope he’s living his best life.
Michael Jackson had an entire shopping mall closed down and had people he knew pretending to be customers just so he could go shopping like a normal person. It must be hard to be an uber-famous celebrity. You can’t even go to a mall without people swarming you.
Sometimes I think it would be nice to be famous, but then again, famous people have to deal with stuff like this and a total lack of privacy.
A Queen Collaboration
Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury collaborated with each other in the ’80s, but Mercury broke it off because Jackson kept bringing in his pet llama to the recording studio. I think that’s the most Michael Jackson thing I’ve ever heard. What’s surprising is that Freddie wasn’t into the whole llama thing.
I would love if somebody brought a llama to my workplace. I think that would be the best day ever.
This Is Not An Emergency
When Michael Jackson’s car broke down once in Beverly Hills, he called 911 for help. He was advised to only use 911 in emergency situations. He was very surprised when they refused to assist him, even after he told them that he was Michael Jackson.
Sorry, Michael, but you can’t take up the time of first responders just because you have a flat tire. That’s what pit crews are for.
A Shrinking Problem
Can you imagine your body literally shrinking in size in a matter of hours? This guy really did work hard on that stage. You can say a lot of things about Michael Jackson, but you can’t say that he didn’t try.
He Couldn’t Sing On The Simpsons
Michael Jackson did actually voice his own character on The Simpsons, but due to contractual restrictions with his label, an imitator did the singing in the episode. It would have been nice to hear his actual singing voice on the show, but I guess rules are rules.
It’s weird that Michael didn’t even own his own singing voice. It just goes to show how much power record labels have over their artists.
A Super Super Bowl Performance
Super Bowl performers have a strict 12-minute time limit, so most performers try and squeeze as much as they can in that given time frame. Not Michael Jackson. After exploding onto the stage, he stood still, staring at the world for 90 seconds.
Michael Jackson just wanted to take it all in and enjoy the moment. The people would get their music, but first, he had to take a moment for himself.
Maybe someone will make Michael’s dreams come true and actually build that 50-foot robot. I wouldn’t be mad if it happened. I think it could be kind of epic. I hope wherever Michael is now, he has all the 50-foot robots his heart desires.
Famous Last Words
Michael Jackson’s last words were for ‘milk,’ his alleged nickname for propofol, the powerful hospital anesthetic that he overdosed on. Conrad Murray, the doctor accused of killing Jackson, said, “he was pleading and begging to please, please let him have some milk because that was the only thing that would work.”
Murray also said that Jackson looked “hysterical” like his character in “Thriller.” Don’t do drugs, kids. It’s scary stuff.
A Full Internet Blowup
When Michael Jackson died, Google mistook millions of searches for a DDoS attack and blocked related searches for 30 minutes. Imagine being so famous that you crash the whole internet? Kim Kardashian has nothing on Michael Jackson.
Also, this is a picture of a young Michael Jackson and a young Donny Osmond. They were so young an innocent. Nobody knew then what the future was going to look like for the duo.
Do The Bartman
Bart Simpson’s hit song “Do the Bartman” was actually written by massive Simpsons fan, Michael Jackson. He may not have been able to sing on the show, but that didn’t stop him from writing a hit song for the classic cartoon.
I think this fact makes me appreciate “Do the Bartman” even more. Thanks, Michael. The Simpsons wouldn’t be the same without you. Although, I still can’t shake that he wasn’t actually singing “Lisa It’s Your Birthday.”
His Spidey Senses Were Tingling
Michael Jackson tried to buy Marvel Comics in the early 1990s so that he could play Spider-Man in his own produced movie. Now, this is a Marvel Movie that I would have liked to see. Can you believe that Marvel made a movie with Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man instead of Michael Jackson?
Michael Jackson was ready and willing to play the part and they were like, you know who would be better than Michael Jackson? Tobey Maguire.
Are You Ok, Annie?
“Annie” is the name of those female dummies that are used to teach CPR. CPR trainees are taught to say “Annie, are you OK?” to the dummy in order to check that the patient is conscious and responsive.
So, Annie in the song is not a real person. I think that makes me like the song even more. It gives it more of a surreal and unexpected edge. Are you OK, Annie?
A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Evan Chandler, the man who accused Michael Jackson of molesting his son, committed suicide 4 months after Jackson’s death. I don’t know what that says about the credibility of Chandler’s claims, I just know that it’s an unfortunate situation all around.
Nobody knows for sure what really went down in that house, but we do know that a lot of tragedy came out of Neverland Ranch. There was so much death in such a short period of time.
Married To Fame
Elvis Presley’s daughter has been married to both Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage. I would say that she has a type, but I’m not sure what type would describe both Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage. Eccentric? Famous? A little bit strange?
I guess if you’re the daughter of Elvis Presley, you’re used to things being a little bit more than a little bit strange. I wonder what it was like to date Michael Jackson?
The King Of Sanwi
Michael Jackson was once officially crowned King of Sanwi, a small kingdom at the bottom of the Ivory Coast. When Jackson died, the nation mourned for two whole days.
I knew Michael was the king of pop, but I didn’t know that he was king of an actual country. I wonder if he was a good ruler, or if he ever actually stepped foot in Sanwi off the Ivory Coast.
Friends With The Band
The band Queen was friends with Michael Jackson, and he was the one who suggested they release “Another One Bites the Dust” as a single. I love that this collaboration happened. Apparently, Queen and Michael Jackson recorded some songs together, although the songs were never released.
I’m sure you can find some of them on YouTube if you look hard enough. Nothing is lost forever now that we have the internet.
The Boy Who Never Grew Up
Michael Jackson was Steven Spielberg’s first choice to play Peter Pan in the movie Hook. I think that makes total sense. Michael Jackson really was the boy who never grew up. He felt like his own childhood was taken from him, so he spent his adult life trying to live like a child— as openly and freely as possible.
The problem is, once your childhood is gone, you can’t really get it back no matter how hard you try.
