Sitcom is. a portmanteau of situational comedy. It’s defined as a television show that features a set of characters that recur in a television show over. a series of episodes. The original sitcoms were based around American families, but in later years we saw groups of friends and co-workers replace the nuclear family unit. The first sitcom aired in 1947 and since then, the form has never really gone away. We’ve seen it evolve over the years, but American television is still largely based on the sitcom format.
